"Peace Offering"

Starfleet Headquarters, February 2376

“I’m sorry, what did you say?”

“I have a new assignment for you,” repeated Admiral Tattok. “There will be a new neutral base from which the Federation and its allies may coordinate relief efforts.”

Synnove Natale nodded. “I gathered that, sir,” the captain replied slowly, “but why in Cardassian space? And why is this going to be a way station for every miscreant species in the universe?”

She realized her mistake when the Roylan’s eyestalks twitched. “Are you questioning Starfleet Command?” he queried.

Natale shook her head quickly. “No, sir—of course not. I just… This project is risky. I didn’t think that the Federation, or Starfleet, was in a position to take such risks so soon after the war’s end. Not to mention the resources involved—or that it will take months to get this place even remotely operational.” 

“We’re aware of these facts,” Tattok said, steepling his hands underneath his chin. “We’re also aware of the risks involved. But chances must be taken to forge a new future for the Alpha Quadrant: a future of peace.”
